When Was the Last Time You Had a Bad Night Because of a Client Living With Dementia?

A caregiver called in a panic because a client was combative and she didn't know what to do. A family filed a complaint because their loved one wasn't being seen as a person. A good caregiver burned out and quit. A client wandered.

If you run a home care agency and you serve clients with dementia — and most of you do — you have had at least one of these nights. Probably more.

The problem is almost never that your caregivers don't care. The problem is that nobody gave them a system.

THE TRANSFORMATION BEFORE AND AFTER THE PROGRAM

Dementia Awareness Training Is Not Dementia Care.

Most agencies give caregivers a brief awareness module and call it training. Then they send those caregivers into homes with no plan, no tools, and no standard. Here is what changes when BrainGuard™ is implemented.

BEFORE: Caregiver arrives and asks: "So what does she like to do?"
AFTER: Caregiver arrives knowing the client's life story, preferred music, and exactly what to try first.
BEFORE:
Personal care is a daily battle. Nobody knows why.
AFTER:
Caregiver uses the PAUSE Protocol, identifies the trigger, and de-escalates with a clinical approach.
BEFORE:
Visit note says: "Client was fine. Had a good day."
AFTER: Visit note documents emotional status, specific engagement, client response, and next-visit plan.
BEFORE:
Next caregiver starts from zero — no handoff, no context.
AFTER:
Next caregiver reads the Engagement Toolkit and knows exactly what worked and what did not.
BEFORE:
Supervisor has no visibility into what caregivers are doing in the home.
AFTER:
Supervisor uses the Field Observation Form quarterly and coaches to a documented standard.
BEFORE:
Family calls to ask how their loved one is doing. Nobody has a real answer.
AFTER:
Family receives proactive updates. Quarterly satisfaction check-in calls are scheduled.
BEFORE:
Discharge planner asks what makes you different. You say: "We care."	AFTER:
Discharge planner hears a specific system. They send you their most complex dementia clients.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

You Don't Need a Trainer. You Need a Program Liaison.

You designate one existing team member as your Program Liaison. They run the 10 sessions using the included facilitator agendas. Here is exactly who does what.

Agency
Director
Designates the Program Liaison • Attends Week 1 • Receives quarterly reports • Makes rollout decisions after Phase 6 evaluation

Program
Liaison
Facilitates all 10 sessions • Completes Life Story intakes • Reviews documentation weekly • Conducts field observations • Updates toolkits monthly • Reports quarterly to director

Supervisor
Supports session facilitation • Conducts field observations • Reviews documentation • Coaches caregivers • Briefs new hires before first dementia visit

Caregiver
Attends all 10 sessions • Uses Engagement Toolkit on every visit • Documents with the five-prompt format • Updates the toolkit when something new is discovered

Family
Participates in Life Story intake • Receives Family Welcome Letter • Joins quarterly satisfaction check-ins • Shares observations with the Program Liaison
Time commitment for your Program Liaison: approximately 4–6 hours per week during launch (Weeks 1–2), 1–2 hours per week ongoing. This is a designated role, not a new hire. When a caregiver leaves, every new hire has a defined onboarding pathway built into the program. The system keeps working.
